George Biddle: Agriculture
(2006)

Biddle: Agriculture

On the computer’s screen, the image glows,
But, O how dull the printer’s version seems.
I envy those who see this work in shows,
Though I can see it glowing in my dreams.

George Biddle was the artists’ advocate
All through the dismal Great Depression years.
Our artists are forever in his debt;
He overcame a generation’s fears.

This painting, Agriculture, is a gift
Of one of this great nation’s native sons.
America’s great promise gets a lift
From those in whose blood patriotism runs.

A gifted artist and soldier, scholar, and man-of-affairs,
His dream of his country’s richness and greatness offset his cares.
