The Poetry of Arnold Cantor

Wanda Gag

(2003)

Art is Drawing, Drawing is Art, the rest
Is Decoration! Drawings alone reveal
The Person in you. Drawings will be the test
Whereby you learn how True is what you Feel.

Until you grasp the Pencil and hold tight,
You cannot see, or even know, your Mind,
Nor separate the Darkness from the Light,
Nor recognize the Treasures that you find.

Until your Body aches to draw -- yes, aches! --
You cannot draw a Chair, a Cat, a Face.
Until you draw, however long it takes,
The World will never let you take your Rightful Place.

Thank God for Wanda Gag! We know, though she is gone,
How elemental are the acts of Holding and Holding On!
