John Marin
Marin drew mostly rabbits as a child
And he was flogged in school because of it.
Somehow his self-esteem was not defiled,
Nor did this lesson wreck his mother wit.
He was inspired by Whistler and became
Both etcher and expatriate like him,
Then painter and exhibitor. His fame
Began in Paris, but began to dim,
For he outgrew his Whistlerian style,
And had a vision of a newer way
To draw an old cathedral! This did rile
The French, but found acceptance in the USA.
What Marin learned to see, dynamic and abstract,
Is universal now, accomplished fact.

1988 poem, but I am pleased to see that I had taken a completely
different point of view this time compared to the last.]
