The Money-Lender of Venice
Shylock --- just look what Shakespeare made of you!
A man just barely human if at all ---
Reciting Scripture like a learned Jew,
Its lessons of Gods mercy past recall.
Obsessed with money, justice, and revenge,
Bereft of generosity and love,
And maddened by Antonio to avenge
The blows and curses you were victim of,
You let the clever Portia lead you on,
Who seemed to feed your cruelty awhile,
Till you were snared, and all you cared for gone,
Your life alone redeemed --- small cause to smile!
Shakespeare was cruel to you; he left you a poor wraith;
He took your daughter, and your money, and your faith!
