The Poetry of Arnold Cantor

On Seeing a Dead Squirrel in the Road

(1986)

    1
Each sentient being has a Soul.
However small, it has a Goal.
Its life and death fulfill some Plan
Be it a squirrel or a man.

    2
A Faith-Full man will sing and pray
And gather favors for That Day.
A faithful squirrel squeals and plays
And gathers nuts for wintry days.

    3
God-Only knows what Hope they’ve earned
Among the ranks of those Returned.
Perhaps that shattered body there
Already blossoms in His-Care.

    4
But is there Justice after life,
Or even Comfort after strife?
O May their prayers be answered then
When hand-in-paw they say “Amen!”.
