God of Abraham
Part 8 The One God
(2011)

Abram -- as his father named him, long before his God renamed him --
Long before his God had claimed him (as his God was meant to do) --
Was the youngest son of Terah, yet he was the one that Terah
Passed along his blessing to, and with it all authority --
Gathered up his family, and took them out of Ur to be
Free from its iniquity.

But he could not hope to flee the symbols of idolatry.
They were everywhere to see, and making people fear and cower.
(Some do claim that, in his youth, this Abram, then obsessed with Truth,
Smashed the idols that his father sold to show they had no power.
And perhaps it scared the neighbors or the clergy far and near,
So that Terah left in fear).

-----------------------------------------------------
Whether truth or speculation, Abram had a revelation:
That instead of many gods to worship there was only one!
Did he travel with elation? Did he hope to build a nation?
Or, beset with trepidation, did he wish his journey done?
Was he driven out of Ur only to perish and be gone?
And the Promise to be none?

-----------------------------------------------------------------
In those days there were no camels. Donkeys were the only mammals
That were used for distant travels and for trade along the way.
Certainly he was a merchant, not surprisingly a merchant.
Doubtless he had potent fighters armed and ready ev’ry day.
For he had a large contingent that he guided ev’ry day,
So as not to go astray.
